Chinese Government Clamps down on Local Government LED Subsidies

“Large LED manufacturers will be speeding up expansion plans, and enter a last production expansion peak,” said Roger Chu, Research Director, LEDinside. "The new subsidiary regulations will raise the bar for future subsidiary applications, and prevent potential new players from entering the market," said Figo Wang, Senior Analyst, LEDinside China.
The Chinese central government’s policy to terminate LED industry subsidies will be extended to local governments, according to a latest Chinese-language UDN report.

The Chinese government has issued massive subsidies to local LED manufacturers in the past, which led to the imbalanced oversupply situation, said an industry insider. Once the Chinese central and local governments cancel LED subsidies, Chinese LED manufacturers will find it difficult to survive. Chinese manufacturers current strategies of headhunting of Taiwanese engineers, and cutthroat price wars are expected to ease, thus restoring fairness to the Cross-Strait LED industry.

In a recent statement issued by China’s Central Government to regulate government subsidiaries, the statement highlighted certain local governments have been issuing financial subsidies in the form of taxes or other forms subsidies to promote local economic development. Although, these subsidiaries have urged industry developments, it has also disrupted market order and affected macroeconomic policies. Some of these subsidies have even violated international agreements the Chinese government signed or caused trade conflicts. Thus, the central government will require local governments to submit all subsidiary project applications to the central government for review before March 2015.

The Chinese government’s decision to regulate local government subsidiaries is not surprising, said Figo Wang, Senior Analyst of LEDinside. “The current Chinese government has gone from quantitative easing monetary policies to tightening monetary policies, and has been scaling down on large scale government projects,” said Wang. “It has been more than five years since China’s LED subsidiary policies were implemented, and it is about time market regulations were formed.”

This view was also shared by Roger Chu, Research Director of LEDinside. “Certain local government finances have been strained from issuing LED subsidies,” said Chu. For instance, Wuhu City, located in Anhui Province, China has seen financial resources shrivel up as large subsidies are issued to San’an Opto and ETI. The statement issued by the Chinese Central Government highlights improving local governments’ budget deficits, and avoiding international trade conflicts, explained Chu.

Both analysts noted the reduction of subsidiaries in the LED industry would benefit the LED market, as uncompetitive LED players are removed from the industry. This perspective was also shared by other industry players that believed the policies will aid the Chinese LED market to eliminate manufacturers without the technology capacity. An LED package manufacturer even projected 85% of Chinese LED epiwafer companies will become insolvent without government subsidies.

Since the Central Government statement mentioned the central government will be inspecting and reviewing subsidiary projects in March 2015, to acquire subsidies some LED manufacturers will quickly expand before the deadline, said Epistar Chairman B.J. Lee.

“Large LED manufacturers will be speeding up expansion plans, and enter a last production expansion peak,” said Chu. Future LED manufacturer expansions are expected to wane. China’s largest LED manufacturer San’an Opto for instance plans to add at least another 100 MOCVDs, and local Suzhou and Tianjin governments have been issuing a lot of new subsidies to the company at the end of 2014. Other LED manufacturers with large scale expansion plans include Changelight and Aucksun, which plan to add 50 MOCVDs each to their existing produciton lines.

"The new subsidiary regulations will raise the bar for future subsidiary applications, and prevent potential new players from entering the market," said Wang. San’an Opto has already issued a statement saying the company will receive subsidies already signed and approved by local governments, but not for new subsidies.

Seoul Semiconductor Launches Smart Lighting LED Light Engine

Seoul Semiconductor a global leader in LED technology announced the release of a new LED light engine with Acrich 3 technology on August 27, 2014. The new light engine is comprised of an LED module with Acrich MJT 5050 series LED, Acrich3 IC technology, and an innovative heat sink and secondary optics. The Acrich light engine does not require a complex AC/DC converter and can be operated directly from the AC mains which simplifies designs, reduces component count and improves on the reliability of the luminaire. This new 30W Acrich light engine delivers a typical luminous flux of 3000 lumens at 120VAC operation at 5000K corresponding to a typical efficiency of 100 lumens per watt. Copenhagen to Roll Out Smart LED Streetlight Project

Danish city Copenhagen plans to roll out a pilot project featuring smart LED lights, according to a Nature World News Report.

The city authorities recently announced a climate change plan to make Copenhagen “carbon neutral” by 2025 and slashing carbon emissions to insignificant levels. As part of these plans, the city is redesigning its streetlights.

The Danish Outdoor Lighting Lab (DOLL) a GreenLab by Photonics is to be opened within a month and expected to stretch for 5.7 miles (9.2 km) along the roads of suburb Albertslund.

The report highlighted the experiment is “a virtual free-for-all” of competing smart technology designs, about 25 companies have made reservations to field test product, according to Inhbabitat. Each lamp has its own IP address so it can be monitored independently.

In an interview with New Scentist, Robert Karliceck the director of the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, suggested smart street lights can even act as toxin sensors in the air or maybe even survey unusual street activity that require police attention.

"Really smart street light systems are going to be much more about the sensors the street lights have, than the LEDs that happen to be in them. The technology is getting very mature very quickly," he said.

Only 10% of iPhone 6 Will be Using Sapphire Cover Glass

New rumors regarding limited usage of sapphire cover glass usage in iPhone 6 have emerged in Taiwan.

According to a Chinese-language Liberty Times report only one out of 10 of Apple's new iPhone 6 will be using the sapphire cover glass.

The report did not clearly indicate sources it turned to for the information. What can be gathered from the report is global sapphire substrate production capacity fall short of Apple iPhone 6 volume demands. Sapphire ingot manufacturers noted current global 2-inch sapphire substrate production capacity is only 10 million pieces (PCS). If other smartphone brands also follow in Apple’s footsteps and introduce sapphire cover glass into their products it could create sapphire substrate shortages.

The report reasoned, due to the lack of sapphire ingot production capacity (an observation LEDinside analysts have already pointed out last week), only 10 percent of iPhone 6 will be utilizing the material.

Although, Apple turned to GT Advanced Technology for exclusive sapphire ingot supply, it has still created a large supply and demand gap in the sapphire substrate industry, the report went on. Based on past experiences, Apple would be shipping at least 10 million smartphones a month after iPhone 6 hits store shelves. If all these phones come with the hard resilient material, sapphire substrate demands would exceed 40 million PCS per month. GTAT’s current monthly production capacity is about a tenth of that at 4 million PCS. The sapphire manufacturer has reached a production capacity bottleneck, and the estimations are considered generous since yield rates are not taken into consideration. Therefore, industry insiders believe only the high-end version Apple iPhone 6 will be equipped with sapphire glass covers.

In the none-Apple camp, Monocrystal, Rubicon, STC and other manufacturers have a monthly sapphire substrate production capacity of 10 million PCS to supply various applications. The current volume is sufficient to meet LED industry monthly demand of 3 million PCS and smartphone optic applications demands for lens and home buttons 1 million PCS.

Samsung and Chinese smartphone manufacturers tend to go after Apple specs. The sapphire ingot production capacity gap will further once these companies also start launching sapphire cover glass smartphones. Global smartphone demands, excluding Apple smartphones, has a shipment volume of 50 million. If 20 percent of these smartphones use sapphire substrate, sapphire demand will far exceed 40 million PCS, equivalent to four times the global sapphire ingot production capacity.

Many Chinese sapphire ingot manufacturers have started to expand production capacity, but there is no guarantee about the potential quality. This is also the main reason that Apple turned to GTAT for sapphire supplies, instead of searching for existing suppliers. The report pointed out, Apple’s exclusive partnership with GTAT prevents iPhone shipments from being affected by major price upticks and material shortages in the sapphire industry.

Production Issues Restrict Apple’s Sapphire Cover iPhone 6 Release

Despite Apple’s plans of launching the iPhone 6 in late 2014, optical demands in handheld devices failed to generate price upticks in the sapphire substrate industry, according to LEDinside, a research subdivision of market-research organization TrendForce.

Sapphire ingot, substrate and patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) prices have all dropped in July 2014, with some product prices down 5%-10% Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ). The research organization noted optical demands lagged behind sapphire  manufacturers’ production expansion, and order volumes have fallen short of expectations. In the sapphire ingot industry, 2-inch ingot prices were down to US $3.5-$4.0, while 2-inch sapphire substrate prices were maintained at US $6.8-$7.2. Four-inch sapphire ingot prices also dropped to US $15-$16, while 4-inch sapphire substrate prices were about US $29-US $31. LEDinside, however, upheld a positive outlook for the sapphire industry performance in second half of 2014, pointing out a new wave of sapphire substrate orders could emerge if the iPhone 6 sales performance were good.

The sapphire material is still being applied in new generation Apple smartphones camera lenses and fingerprint recognition readers. If the iPhone 6 keeps up Apple’s previous smartphone models hot selling record, sapphire demands will be driven by the smartphone’s applications till the end of this year. However, the much anticipated sapphire cover glass remains missing from the picture. Analysis of the iPhone 6 supply chain indicates related component suppliers have to start shipping products to OEMs for assembly in June 2014 to meet the September launch date. Yet, the research institute did not discover demands for smartphone cover glass. The sapphire glass version iPhone 6 will be issued in limited volumes this year, mostly because sapphire ingot manufacturers yield rates were lower than forecasts and issues involved in sapphire glass processing.

Meanwhile, further observations will be required to determine whether Apple’s final iWatch will incorporate sapphire glass cover, said a LEDinside analyst, who declined to be identified. Since sapphire glass processing is relatively difficult, it would be problematic to mass produce sapphire watch cover glass if the iWatch is 2.5 D. Additionally, sapphire glass processing will become even more strenuous if the wearable device uses OLED panels.

Xiaomi Dumps US $12.76 LED Smartband onto Wearable Device Market

China’s consumer electronic manufacturer Xiaomi, who was recently listed on the Nasdaq, has once again detonated a bomb onto the market with the launch of a super cheap LED smartband, according to a Chinese media 25PP.com report.

The company that is already creating waves in the smartphone industry with its affordable phone models, is now moving the same business model into the wearable device market.
Xiaomi's smartband costs around US $13, a mere fraction of similar products on the market. 

Costing a mere RMB 79 (US $12.76), the smartband is pretty robust. The metallic smartband features a rectangular LED display with three LED lights comes with an IP67 rating case which allows it to be worn even during bathing or showering.

The smartband has a design similar to many sports bands and uses a 41mAH battery with a standby time of 30 days, five times longer than the average smartband, according to the company. The company claims a low power Bluetooth chip is used to achieve this. The band mostly relies on Bluetooth connection to communicate and exchange data with smartphones.

The smartband device pricing is far below most competing device’s RMB 100 to several thousand Renminbi. Xiaomi is once again slashing smartband manufacturer prices, with some Chinese netizens speculating the company is once again disrupting the market with the product lanch. The company already introduced the widely popular and very affordable Xiaomi and Red Rice (Honmi) smartphones onto the market, which is eating into profits of Samsung and other large smartphone manufacturers. Once the Xiaomi smartband hits the shelves, other companies are expected to release similar products.

The band features are currently limited to smartphone devices that run on Android 4.3 and above systems. Another limitation is the phone's Bluettoh has to be the low power consumption 4.0 version. The band is capable of acting as an electronic pass for smartphone access, eliminating the need for numerical codes. Similar to other smartband devices, the product can measure exercise activity, sleep, and function as a smart alarm clock.

LED Manufacturers Target Smart Lighting Market Amid LED Bulb Price Declines in May 2014

The global 40W equiv. LED bulb Average Selling Price (ASP) declined 3.2 percent to US $14.20 in May, with price decreases most evident in China. Additionally, the ASP for 60W equiv. LED bulbs dipped slightly by 3.6 percent to US $19.50. With continual LED bulb ASP declines, manufacturers are looking to smart bulbs to break free from intense pricing competition, according to the latest LED bulb retail findings for May 2014 from LEDinside, a division of research organization Trendforce.

As the ASPs have been declining the LED bulb penetration has been gradually rising. Smart bulbs have become a major trend this year in the LED lighting industry, and their impact in the market is deepening. Meanwhile, an increasing number of manufacturers have begun introducing smart lighting application and control systems into lighting solutions to maintain a competitive edge in market. The firm said that after large international manufacturers, such as Philips and Samsung established a name for themselves in smart lighting, many Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers have followed suit by launching smart bulbs, including Foshan Lighting, Adata Lighting, and even U.S. based consumer electronics manufacturer Belkin.

Smart bulb prices remain relatively expensive, despite growing popularity. In the U.S. market for example, a normal 60W equiv. bulb is priced around US $16, but smart bulbs can cost about double with a hefty price tag of between US $30-$60, according to data compiled by LEDinside. Consumers are now demanding bulbs with dimmable capabilities for residential and decorative lighting in order to create more ambient atmospheres. Additionally, manufacturers are introducing control systems such as apps to act as a communication bridge between bulbs and mobile devices to enhance added-value features. LEDinside said consumers are more willing to accept higher price tags for smart bulbs because of the value-added capabilities.

Smart lighting consumers are mainly concentrated in Europe and the U.S. where buying power and maturity is higher. Comparatively, smart lighting is still in the conceptual stage in the Chinese market where high price and lack of standards for lighting control solutions inhibit smart lighting development. Smart lighting popularization in China, therefore, still requires a mature supply chain and cooperation, the firm added.

LEDinside also noted that LED smart bulb costs and ASPs are estimated to drop further following an increase in popularization and production volume expansion.

40W and 60W Equiv. Prices Maintain Global Downward Trend Amid Adjustments to Product Retail

The ASP for 40W equiv. bulbs in China were down 12.8% in May 2014. Existing products also dropped in price, with the Haide Lighting Technology 5W bulb ASP declining from US $4 to US $2.60. Moreover, a portion of high-priced products were temporarily terminated, such as bulbs by manufacturers Osram and Samsung.

The U.S. product ASP also dipped in May, declining around 8.3%. Products entering the promotional period showed a dramatic price drop. The Insignia 9W bulb ASP for example declined 50%. Philips’ 9W dimmable bulbs showed a similar price decline.

In the 60W equiv. LED product sector, the ASP in China declined 9.1% in May. Existing product ASPs remained steady, with a portion of high price products temporarily terminated or declining in price, such as Samsung’s 10.8W bulb, which was originally priced at US $14.30. The UK ASP in May 2014 saw a dramatic decrease of 22%. Existing products, however, remained steady since some higher priced products were temporarily discontinued, such as Ledon’s 12W 800LM bulb originally priced at US $40.50, noted LEDinside.

Lumenpulse Lights Up 102-Year-Old High Level Bridge

Lumenpulse, a leading pure-play specification-grade LED lighting solutions provider, has helped bring light to Edmonton's High Level Bridge. The company's LED luminaires were used to illuminate the 102-year-old bridge for the first time.

The historic lighting system is the result of the "Light the Bridge" fundraising campaign, which sought to provide the bridge with a flexible, dynamic LED lighting scheme. Launched in 2013, the campaign quickly caught the public imagination, generating widespread media coverage and community engagement, with tens of thousands of individual and corporate donations.

"We're very proud to have been involved in this historic, and grassroots, project," said Francois-Xavier Souvay, Lumenpulse President and CEO. "The High Level Bridge is a fantastic example of the impact LED technology and flexibility can have on an older structure. It has enhanced the beauty and iconic status of the bridge, all while paying tribute to its past. We're thrilled with the results," he said.

Edmonton-based Prolux Lighting programmed the lighting system, using Lumenpulse Lumenfacade Color Changing luminaires to illuminate the bridge's pedestrian walkway. The luminaires are mounted above the walkway, creating a continuous, mile-long veil of light. Fully dimmable, the luminaires can be programmed to change intensity and color throughout the night, allowing the city to change the look of the bridge during special events, including the bridge's recent Canada Day unveiling.

"The High Level Bridge is our biggest landmark, but because it was always in the dark, it didn't have a very proud image. We wanted to change that," said Derek Pogany, principal at Prolux Lighting. "Lumenpulse has a long history of lighting these types of structures. They understand the climate challenges in a Canadian city like Edmonton, and they know how to handle the vibration rating for a busy bridge like this. They were ideal partners," he said.

Built in 1912, the High Level Bridge links the city's north and south sides, accommodating rail, automobile and pedestrian traffic. The newly lit bridge was inaugurated on July 1st, 2014.

U.S. Army Investigates Shelter Lighting Effects on Soldier Cognitive Performance

Researchers at the U.S. Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) are now studying the impact of different types of lighting in military shelters on soldiers, according to U.S. Army report.

The study is especially examining the effect of lighting on mood, visual acuity, cognitive alertness/awareness, and ability to perform.

Two types of lights are being investigated in the study including the traditional fluorescent light and LED. Color temperatures studied range from low color temperature yellow and reds to high color temperatures of blue or white. A total of 24 soldiers between ages 18 to 31 participated in the study that took place at NSRDEC for five days.

Three LED systems were analyzed to see how the technological differences compare, and how the lighting affects soldiers, said Breanne Hawes, member of the Cognitive Science Team and lead researcher on this particular project. The study found compared to fluorescent lighting, LED lighting was able to generate a more positive mood in the work environment, increased alertness and faster performance on visual perceptual and cognitive tasks. In comparison, under fluorescent lighting, soldiers were more likely to be less alert, more fatigued and depressed over time. Solders also had a slower response time on cognitive tasks measuring spatial and verbal memory under the traditional light.

“The ultimate aim of the project is to develop efficient spaces that promote well being,” said Breanne Hawes, member of the Cognitive Science Team and lead researcher on this particular project. One of the goals of the study is to predict and enhance cognitive performance to help shape technology and material development, explained Caroline Mahoney, leader of the Cognitive Science Team. On this study, the Cognitive Science Team worked with the Shelters Team and the Special Projects Team.

 “There is a ton of past research on what lighting can do to humans,” Hawes said. “It can affect how sleepy you are, your sleeping patterns, or how productive you are. But this has rarely been studied as a military application.”

“This study is important because it is the first study that has considered the tradeoff between the differences in cost between the lighting technologies and the impact of the lighting on Soldier mood and performance,” Mahoney said.

The findings from the study could have both military and industrial applications in helping designers develop work environment lighting that helps improve concentration and mood.

Japanese Farmer Partners with GE to Develop World Largest LED Indoor Farm

This GE blog entry interviews Japanese plant physiologist and farmer Shigeharu Shimamura about the developments of LED indoor farming and what the future holds for hydroponics.

Humans have spent the last 10,000 years mastering agriculture. But a freak summer storm or bad drought can still mar many a well-planted harvest. Not anymore, says Japanese plant physiologist Shigeharu Shimamura, who has moved industrial-scale farming under the roof.

Working in Miyagi Prefecture in eastern Japan, which was badly hit by powerful earthquake and tsunamis in 2011, Shimamura turned a former Sony Corporation semiconductor factory into the world’s largest indoor farm illuminated by LEDs. The special LED fixtures were developed by GE and emit light at wavelengths optimal for plant growth.

The farm is nearly half the size of a football field (25,000 square feet). It opened on July and it is already producing 10,000 heads of lettuce per day. “I knew how to grow good vegetables biologically and I wanted to integrate that knowledge with hardware to make things happen,” Shimamura says.
The farm uses 17,500 LED lights spread over 18 cultivation racks reaching 15 levels high.

The LED lights are a key part of the farm’s magic. They allow Shimamura to control the night-and-day cycle and accelerate growth. “What we need to do is not just setting up more days and nights,” he says. “We want to achieve the best combination of photosynthesis during the day and breathing at night by controlling the lighting and the environment.”

Shimamura says that the systems allows him to grow lettuce full of vitamins and minerals two-and-a-half times faster than an outdoor farm. He is also able to cut discarded produce from 50 percent to just 10 percent of the harvest, compared to a conventional farm. As a result, the farms productivity per square foot is up 100-fold, he says.

By controlling temperature, humidity and irrigation, the farm can also cut its water usage to just 1 percent of the amount needed by outdoor fields.

Shimamura got the idea for his indoor farm as a teenager, when he visited a “vegetable factory” at the Expo ’85 world’s fair in Tsukuba, Japan. He went on to study plant physiology at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, and in 2004 started an indoor farming company called Mirai, which in Japanese means “future.”

The concept took off in 2011, when GE approached Shimamura with an idea for using advanced LED lights to illuminate the farm. The LEDs last longer and consume 40 percent less power than fluorescent lights. The companies started testing the technology in March 2012 and came up with the final design a year later.

GE engineers used proprietary technology to make the lights thin enough to fit inside the stacks, provide uniform light and endure the high humidity inside. “That way, we can put in more growing racks and increase productivity dramatically,” says Tomoaki Kimura, country manager for GE Lighting Japan.

The GE Japan team believes that indoor farms like the one in the Miyagi Prefecture could be a key to solving food shortages in the world. Mirai and GE are already working on “plant factories” in Hong Kong and the Far East of Russia. Says Shimamura: “Finally, we are about to start the real agricultural industrialization.”

Chinese LED Manufacturers Show Strong Revenue Growth in 1H14

Over 80 percent of Chinese LED companies have reported good profits in first half of 2014, according to data compiled by Shanghai Securities News.

Out of 38 listed LED manufacturers 1H14 revenue performance, 31 have reported good performance as the market rebounds and business continues to grow.

Taking a closer inspection, 12 out of 38 of the companies reported net profit was up 50 percent including LED display manufacturer Liantronics (270 percent), HC SemiTek Corp (215 percent), Seastar (113%) and others.

Liantronics subsidiary Sichuan Time Share Advertising & Communication, consolidated revenue in May 2014 showed net profits were up from RMB 20 million (US $3.22 million) to RMB 21 million, while another subsidiary Liandong Entertainment revenue was up by nearly eight times from RMB 1.35 million in 1H13 to RMB 9.77 million in 1H14.

Upstream LED chip manufacturers, such as HC Semitek attributed stellar performance during first half of the year to strong growth in LED chip market and production capacity expansions. Companies that reaped huge benefits this year including Leyard, Honglitronics, Aoto Electronics and others noted the LED market was growing rapidly. These companies have gradually expanded production capacity, and increasing revenue has led to growing net profits that contributed to strong growth

However, sapphire manufacturer East Crystal Electronic Co.(ECEC) reported its first net profit loss, having plunged 13 times below the same period last year. Other manufacturers including Mosopower, Refond, Changelight and others also saw profits plunge by 94.5 percent, 10 to 25 percent, and 5 to 25 percent respectively.

ECEC incurred heavy losses during first half of 2014 mainly because of intense competition from quartz crystal component sector, which led to lowered product prices. In addition, the company has been unable to manufacture LED sapphire substrates at mass production level, resulting in higher manufacturing costs.

Despite of losses most manufacturers agreed the LED market was rebounding in China. Mosopower for instance noted the company’s orders had increased compared to first half of 2013, and revenue from main businesses continued to grow steadily. Refond, Nata Opto-electronic Material, and Elech-tech International also made similar remarks.

Agnitron to Ship 1500°C Reactor Upgrade for Veeco MOCVD System

Agnitron Technology is scheduled to ship its latest 1500°C+ reactor upgrade for the Veeco MOCVD D-series Legacy System platform. The single 2 or 3 inch wafer, vertical quartz tube reactor upgrade will be fitted to a D180 system at the Korean Photonics Technology Institute (Kopti) in Gwangju, Seoul, South Korea. The upgrade will ship from Agnitron’s facility in Eden Prairie, MN in July after completion of final preshipment verification testing. Installation and configuration of Agnitron’s proprietary Imperium-MOCVDTM control software is included as a standard feature with the high temperature reactor upgrade.

The High Temperature Radio-Frequency (HT-RF) reactor upgrade provides an economical high temperature growth capability to researchers desiring the highest quality Aluminum Nitride (AlN) epitaxial films which are grown at process temperatures above 1400°C. Additionally, the HT-RF reactor excels at growth of all nitride based materials and is also suitable for Silicon Carbide.

“The high temperature capability of this MOCVD reactor is unparalleled by any other commercially available equipment technology and this upgrade is an excellent match for the proven and well-liked D-series Veeco Legacy platform,” said Ross Miller, Director of Agnitron Technology Development. “Ultra-low gas flows of the HT-RF reactor translate to hydride gas consumption 15% that of a D180 reactor making this a very capable yet economical choice for researchers.” Miller also mentioned that Atomic Layer Deposition style switching manifolds are available as an option for supporting Migration Enhanced Epitaxy growth techniques.

Currently the HT-RF reactor is offered as a standalone upgrade for the Veeco Legacy D125 and D180 Nitride MOCVD platforms as well as in the form of an Agnitron original design complete MOCVD system known as Agilis. The Agilis system provides all the process capabilities of the HT-RF reactor but in a cabinet with all new state of the art electronics and digital hardware communication protocols. Agilis also provides a significantly more compact footprint than the D-series Veeco platforms.

An identical HT-RF reactor upgrade is currently in operation at Agnitron’s facility for growth of AlN as part of the power electronics research program funded by the Department of Energy.

Lidar-equipped drones create optimum 'rim lighting' for moviemakers

In the interests of better creating a type of subject lighting called "rim lighting," researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT; Cambridge, MA) and Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) have created a photographer's and moviemaker's lighting system that includes a small quadricopter drone carrying a white-light source and a lidar system.

In rim lighting, only the edge of the photographer's subject is strongly lit; however, this type of lighting is normally very difficult to achieve and maintain, especially when the subject is moving. The MIT/Cornell system incorporates the moviemaker's video camera, an image-processing unit to determine the instantaneous proportion of rim lighting in the image, and the drone itself, which moves around (using its lidar for positioning) to maintain optimum rim lighting.

The camera-mounted interface for the system was made simple and intuitive for use by nonspecialists.

The group will present their prototype system at the International Symposium on Computational Aesthetics in Graphics, Visualization, and Imaging (Vancouver, Canada; 8-10 August 2014; co-located with SIGGRAPH)

According to Manohar Srikanth, who worked on the system as a graduate student and postdoc at MIT and who is now a senior researcher at Nokia, he and his coauthors -- MIT professor of computer science and engineering Frédo Durand and Cornell's Kavita Bala, who also did her doctorate at MIT -- chose rim lighting for their initial experiments precisely because it's a difficult effect.

Easy operation

To use the lighting system, the photographer indicates the direction from which the rim light should come, and the drone flies to that side of the subject. The photographer then specifies the width of the rim as a percentage of its initial value, repeating that process until the desired effect is achieved.

Thereafter, the robot automatically maintains the specified rim width. "If somebody is facing you, the rim you would see is on the edge of the shoulder, but if the subject turns sideways, so that he's looking 90 degrees away from you, then he's exposing his chest to the light, which means that you'll see a much thicker rim light," Srikanth says. "So in order to compensate for the change in the body, the light has to change its position quite dramatically."

In the same way, Srikanth says, the system can compensate for the photographer's movements; the calculations occur at a rate of 20 per second.

The researchers tested their prototype in a motion-capture studio, which uses a bank of high-speed cameras to measure the position of specially designed light-reflecting tags with millimeter accuracy; several such tags were affixed to the helicopter.

The purpose of the tests was simply to evaluate the control algorithm, which performed well; rim lighting doesn't require the millimeter accuracy of the motion-capture studio, notes Srikanth. "We only need a resolution of two or three centimeters," he says.

A challenging aspect of the brief was that the architect wanted the hollows in the fins to shine light onto the binary aluminium screen facade. A tube based lighting technology proposed originally to light up the facade was ultimately rejected due to a range of reasons.

Next Investment Cycle Already Begun in LED Front-end Equipment

Driven by the fanfare over (and over-estimation of) the LCD display market, the LED front-end equipment market experienced an unprecedented investment cycle in 2010-2011, driven mostly by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor shipments to new Chinese entrants who benefited from generous subsidies of the Chinese central and local governments in a bid to stimulate domestic chip production. Now, following a 18-24 month digestion period, the market is slowly recovering and will experience another investment cycle in 2014-2016, driven by demand for general lighting applications, according to the report ‘LED Frond-End Equipment Market’ from Yole Développement. However, this second cycle will be limited in value due to: improvements in equipment throughput and yields; increased competition; and potential consolidation in the industry.

Indeed, LED makers initially relied on old semiconductor systems designed for other applications. However, now that the industry has reached a critical size, several LED-dedicated systems (which take into account the specificities of LED manufacturing) have been commercialized, notes Yole.


As a result, the equipment market will peak at nearly $580m in 2015, with MOCVD reactors representing more than 80% of business. The bulk of these are still being shipped to Chinese manufacturers or Taiwanese players transitioning to 4”-diameter wafers. Lithography, plasma etching, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment will follow a similar trend, Yole forecasts.

Different markets with different competitive landscapes

The LED epitaxy equipment market (MOCVD reactors) is very concentrated, under the control of the big three (Aixtron, Veeco and Taiyo Nippon Sanso) who represented nearly 97% of the market in 2013.

Comparatively, the lithography, plasma etching, PECVD and PVD equipment markets are much more fragmented, with several players battling to enlarge their market share. For example, the top three suppliers of LED lithography equipment represented nearly 70% of the market in 2013, with the remaining 30% divided between more than 10 competitors.

Yole says that this situation is due to the specificities of the different LED front-end manufacturing process steps:

LED epitaxy is quite specific and requires dedicated tools supplied by companies that have developed strong expertise.

Other LED front-end manufacturing processes can use older or refurbished semiconductor systems designed for other applications. Also, with the growth of the LED industry, suppliers of LED-dedicated systems have also appeared. This has further fragmented these markets, now both traditional semiconductor equipment suppliers and new LED-dedicated equipment suppliers compete.

Increased competition in MOCVD, but no impact on market structure

The LED epitaxy equipment market has always been of central interest to equipment manufacturers due to the high average selling price (ASP), strong profitability, and large market volume (compared with other equipment sectors).

Since 2010, following the explosion of the LED TV market, more than 20 players (mostly from Asia) have tried to enter the MOCVD reactor market, but without real success: in 2013, these new suppliers represented only 3% of the market share (up only +2% compared with 2010).

This situation has arisen for two main reasons:

New entrants have missed the first two LED growth cycles (small-display and large-display applications) that allowed leaders to build their expertise and their networks (sales offices, training centeres etc). Even the big players in semiconductor equipment manufacturing, such as Applied Materials, did not achieve access in these markets.

Revenue collected during the 2010-2011 investment cycle (totaling more than $2bn for MOCVD reactors, with more than 90% going to Aixtron and Veeco) allowed those firms to slash ASPs and initiate a price war to lever further market-entry barriers.

The current LED front-end industry is driven largely by cost reduction (as technological evolutions are reaching their saturation point), notes Yole. The main strategy developed by a new MOCVD reactor supplier is to focus on reducing cost of ownership (CoO), for example through a new heating system, new gas flow design, increased automation, etc. However, even if this is the best strategy to adopt, Yole does not expect new entrants to make a big gain in market share in future, as the finances and expertise of the big two suppliers far surpasses any of their competitors.


Yole concludes that, in the short term, only two types of suppliers (outside of the big three) will survive:

suppliers that develop collaborations with some big LED makers;

Chinese suppliers that are able to scrape together bits and pieces of the huge local market.

Suppliers of flexible LED strips highlight greater luminous efficacy

Companies are rolling out units with 2835 diodes. IP65 to IP68-rated configurations remain on the agenda.

Product initiatives in China’s flexible LED strips line are expanding from emphasis on water-resistant types to the adoption of smaller SMD LEDs with a higher luminous efficacy. A number of makers have released models with 2835 diodes, which boast up to 90 to 100lm/W or twice as much as that of local mainstream 3528 versions. The former kind is therefore more cost-effective by 20 percent. Shenzhen Schritzen has 12W units with 3,000 to 7,000K color temperature, 50,000hr life span and an IP68 rating.The latter supplier projects annual demand rise will surpass 20 percent in coming years. The 2835 category currently has between 10 and 15 percent share of the country’s output.

In outdoor-use products, manufacturers stay focused on IP65 to IP68-rated varieties, taking advantage of steadily climbing requirement. Such units account for about 50 percent of domestic yield for the line. Companies offer IP68 models with PVC or silicone sleeves. The former material features enhanced transparency, while the second is highly flexible and fade-resistant.

Customization continues to drive the segment, with suppliers accepting buyers’ specifications on SMD LED type, diode color and strip length. Citylux (China) LED Lighting Ltd derives 30 percent of business from OEM and ODM orders. It plans to keep to this strategy in coming years.

In response to projections of sustained 10 percent sales growth in the months ahead, most China makers aim to raise output. Citylux will do so by 10 percent after a 30 percent boost last year, from which it garnered $26 million in total revenue.

Increasing shipments to emerging markets such as the Middle East and South America contribute to this development, although the US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region remain local suppliers’ key destinations. Citylux, which sends products to North America and Brazil, foresees exports to the latter will shoot up by year-end.

There are about 300 flexible LED strips makers in mainland China, 80 percent of which are domestic operations and the rest with foreign investment, mainly from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Guangdong province remains the major production hub for the line, playing host to two-thirds of the mainland’s supplier pool and gathering many in the cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan and Guangzhou. Other manufacturers are in the provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. These four areas are expected to attract more domestic and international players.

Samsung looks into child labor allegations at China supplier


Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Thursday said it is investigating an allegation that a supplier in southern China used child labor.

U.S. activist group China Labor Watch on Thursday released a report alleging that Dongguan Shinyang Electronic Co Ltd, a supplier of mobile phone covers and parts, hired child labor for its assembly lines.

"We are urgently looking into the latest allegations and will take appropriate measures in accordance with our policies to prevent any cases of child labor in our suppliers," Samsung said an emailed statement.

Several phone calls to the Chinese company went unanswered.

The claim from the New York-based watchdog comes after Samsung said in an annual sustainability report on June 30 that a third-party audit of 100 suppliers in China found no instances of child labor.

On Thursday, Samsung said it conducted a "thorough audit" of Dongguan Shinyang in March 2013, followed by a third-party inspection in August and another last month.

"No cases of child labor were found during these audits," the South Korean firm said in its emailed statement.

Samsung demands suppliers adopt a hiring process that includes face-to-face interviews and the use of electronic scanners to detect fake IDs, to ensure compliance with Samsung's zero-tolerance policy on child labor.

But China Labor Watch said it found "at least five child workers" without contracts at the supplier in question.

In a statement accompanying the China Labor Watch report, watchdog Executive Director Li Qiang said Samsung's social responsibility reports were "advertisement."

"Samsung has put its energy into audits and the production of these reports, but these things are meant to appease investors and don't have any real value for workers," Li said.

The watchdog previously accused one of Samsung's suppliers of using child labor in 2012. Samsung subsequently said it found no under-aged workers at the facility following its own audit.

3D printed my LED Lamp

Finding useful things to 3D print can sometimes be a chore, among the vast amounts of designs that are floating around the internet, it is hard to find objects that are more than just interesting to look at. With the hundreds of thousdands of designs out there for 3D printable objects, coming up with something to print that you could use on a daily basis should be easier.

One man, named Tyler Cunningham, realized this, and decided to design and 3D print something he and others could get use out of. So what did he create? A uniquely designed, yet very simple to 3D print LED lamp, that he calls myLamp.

“I came up with the idea while trying to build something actually useful with my printer,” Cunningham told 3DPrint.com. “I’ve been interested in 3D printers for two years, after building a Prusa i2. I’ve been hooked ever since. After growing tired of printing the usual small trinkets found on Thingiverse, I set out to design something I would actually use and something on a slightly larger scale. I looked around the house for something I needed and finally settled on a small lamp we had planned to purchase for my daughters room.”

Instead of running to the store, and throwing down $100 or more to purchase a lamp that would be no different than any other lamp in his house, Cunningham decided to come up with a design to 3D print his own.

He wanted the design to be as simple as possible to 3D print and then construct, so that anyone with a 3D printer could easily make one. myLamp measures 12.5″ tall, including a lamp shade that is 5 3/4″ tall and 5-5.4″ wide. The total cost to 3D print and construct the lamp? An astounding $10, which includes the price of filament, a lamp wiring kit, and the bulb. It takes approximately 12 hours to print (mostly for the lamp shade, which is larger in volume).

He purchased the lamp wiring kit at a home improvement store, and used a LED bulb, since it produces very little heat. He offers two separate versions of his lamp shade, depending on the look  you are going for.

This isn’t it though… Cunningham has plans of creating some add-ons to change the look and height of the lamp, so that users can configure it the way they please. He’s also working on some future projects which he may plan on selling at a later date. The myLamp design is available for free on 3D printing design repository, Thingiverse.

'World's largest' all-LED vegetable plant starts operations

Mirai Co Ltd built a vegetable plant that uses only LED lamps for supplying light to grow vegetables in Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

It is one of the largest all-LED vegetable plants in the world, the company said. At the plant, it is possible to ship 10,000 heads of lettuce per day.

The building of the vegetable plant used to be part of Sony Sendai Technology Center. Mirai has been conducting verification tests for the development of technologies to control cultivation environments and LED lamps suited for vegetable plants in collaboration with General Electric Japan Ltd as one of the projects funded by Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry. Kajima Corp designed and constructed the entire plant and developed a rack for cultivation.

The most distinguished feature of the plant is the LED lamp that General Electric Japan developed for vegetable plants. It evenly disperses LED light, which has a high directivity. Also, the company introduced a technology to apply lights with different wavelengths in accordance with the growth stage of a vegetable.

For example, at an early stage when a vegetable has just been taken out of a room that grows seedlings, a whitish light generated by combining white and red LEDs is applied to the vegetable to facilitate photosynthesis. Then, a reddish light generated by using red and blue LEDs is applied to facilitate the growth of leaves and roots. When the harvest time approaches, the whitish light is applied again to facilitate photosynthesis.

As a result, power consumption was reduced by 40% while yield per unit area increased by 50%, compared with a vegetable plant using only fluorescent lamps. However, Mirai did not disclose the specific wavelengths of the LED lamps, saying that they are its know-how.

Also, to make use of the building whose ceiling is as high as 7m, a 6m-high 15-level rack was developed. While lighting equipment, nutrient solution circulation system, etc were integrated and made highly functional, costs were reduced by, for example, using general-purpose rack materials.

In addition, Kajima Corp introduced technologies to simulate cultivation environments. The technologies were developed based on the know-how built up by constructing vegetable plants. The position of the air-conditioning and other equipment was decided by repeatedly performing calculations to make sure that the multiple levels of the rack do not cause large differences in temperature, air flow, illuminance, etc.

LED Manufacturers Target Smart Lighting Market Amid LED Bulb Price Declines in May 2014

The global 40W equiv. LED bulb Average Selling Price (ASP) declined 3.2 percent to US $14.20 in May, with price decreases most evident in China. Additionally, the ASP for 60W equiv. LED bulbs dipped slightly by 3.6 percent to US $19.50. With continual LED bulb ASP declines, manufacturers are looking to smart bulbs to break free from intense pricing competition, according to the latest LED bulb retail findings for May 2014, a division of research organization Trendforce.

As the ASPs have been declining the LED bulb penetration has been gradually rising. Smart bulbs have become a major trend this year in the LED lighting industry, and their impact in the market is deepening. Meanwhile, an increasing number of manufacturers have begun introducing smart lighting application and control systems into lighting solutions to maintain a competitive edge in market. The firm said that after large international manufacturers, such as Philips and Samsung established a name for themselves in smart lighting, many Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers have followed suit by launching smart bulbs, including Foshan Lighting, Adata Lighting, and even U.S. based consumer electronics manufacturer Belkin.

Smart bulb prices remain relatively expensive, despite growing popularity. In the U.S. market for example, a normal 60W equiv. bulb is priced around US $16, but smart bulbs can cost about double with a hefty price tag of between US $30-$60, according to data compiled by LEDinside. Consumers are now demanding bulbs with dimmable capabilities for residential and decorative lighting in order to create more ambient atmospheres. Additionally, manufacturers are introducing control systems such as apps to act as a communication bridge between bulbs and mobile devices to enhance added-value features. LEDinside said consumers are more willing to accept higher price tags for smart bulbs because of the value-added capabilities.

Smart lighting consumers are mainly concentrated in Europe and the U.S. where buying power and maturity is higher. Comparatively, smart lighting is still in the conceptual stage in the Chinese market where high price and lack of standards for lighting control solutions inhibit smart lighting development. Smart lighting popularization in China, therefore, still requires a mature supply chain and cooperation, the firm added.

LEDinside also noted that LED smart bulb costs and ASPs are estimated to drop further following an increase in popularization and production volume expansion.

40W and 60W Equiv. Prices Maintain Global Downward Trend Amid Adjustments to Product Retail

The ASP for 40W equiv. bulbs in China were down 12.8% in May 2014. Existing products also dropped in price, with the Haide Lighting Technology 5W bulb ASP declining from US $4 to US $2.60. Moreover, a portion of high-priced products were temporarily terminated, such as bulbs by manufacturers Osram and Samsung.

The U.S. product ASP also dipped in May, declining around 8.3%. Products entering the promotional period showed a dramatic price drop. The Insignia 9W bulb ASP for example declined 50%. Philips’ 9W dimmable bulbs showed a similar price decline.

In the 60W equiv. LED product sector, the ASP in China declined 9.1% in May. Existing product ASPs remained steady, with a portion of high price products temporarily terminated or declining in price, such as Samsung’s 10.8W bulb, which was originally priced at US $14.30. The UK ASP in May 2014 saw a dramatic decrease of 22%. Existing products, however, remained steady since some higher priced products were temporarily discontinued, such as Ledon’s 12W 800LM bulb originally priced at US $40.50, noted LEDinside.

A partnership between researchers in the US and China has increased LED output power by more than one-fifth via the creation of air gaps within the device.To deliver the increase in extraction efficiency, the researchers from National Chung Hsing University and Yale University drilled holes with a laser, before etching a heavily doped GaN layer beneath the LED structure.

Fabrication of these novel LEDs began with growth of an epistructure on sapphire that had a low-temperature buffer, an 1.2µm-thick undoped GaN layer, a heavily doped 0.2µm -thick GaN layer and a 0.2µm-thick undoped GaN layer. On top of this they deposited a relatively conventional device structure, which was capped with a 250 nm-thick layer of the transparent conductive material indium tin oxide.

Engineers employed a 355 nm laser to drill 10µm -diameter holes down to the heavily doped n-type layer, and used an electrochemical wet-etching process to create disk-shaped voids with a diameter of 40µm.

Driven at 20 mA, the etched LED delivered a light output power that was 22 percent higher than that of the control. However, this gain in the output came at the expense of a small increase in operating voltage from 3.12 V to 3.19 V, due to the slightly reduced emission area and the increased resistance of the treated LED structure.

LED lighting design for the Deli Shop

The Deli Shop
The Deli Shop is located in the great district of Paraíso, in São Paulo. The restaurant believes and follows the concept of quick and healthy meals.Designer largely use LED bulbs in The Deli Shop lighting,How do you think about the lighting design?

The main concept was to create a young and urban environment. The idea came up as the restaurant is located right next to two of the most important schools in the city, and the students are the main clientele.The choice of a sober and more neutral wall coating, blended with the black ceiling brought a modern and urban atmosphere to the restaurant. The mix of those neutral tones, made the furnitures and the decoration vibrant colours stand out, giving a great balance of tonesto the place.

The use of only a few tables with stools to sit on highlights the concept of quick meals and great clientele turnover, due to the small amount of time that they have for a lunch break.The glass façade is the only entry of natural light in the main room and therefore, it’s completely transparent. It is also a great showcase for the Deli Shop, as people walking by the street also have a chance to take a look and be dazzled by this great modern yet unusual place, right under an old and deteriorated five stories building.
The Deli Shop
